About US:
We are a newly formed self-defense school operating out of the South West Academy of Kyokushin Karate in Laporte, Indiana.
Sensei Ted Kolcz began his Kyokushin Karate journey in 2018 under the instruction of the late Hanshi Gregory T. Johnson at the South West Academy Of Kyokushin Karate. Following Hanshi Johnson’s passing, he continued his training and development under the guidance of Shihan Dennis Morales who continued the dojo's legacy.
As a Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt), Sensei Ted has become a cornerstone of the dojo and an invaluable member of the instructional team. He serves as the lead instructor for the Children’s Program, where he is dedicated to developing strong fundamentals, discipline, confidence, and respect in the next generation of martial artists. In addition, he assists with the Adult Program and plays a key role in the dojo’s Self-Defense classes and fitness aspects, helping students of all ages build practical skills and confidence though leadership.
Beyond his Kyokushin training, Sensei Ted has spent many years studying and educating himself in self-defense concepts, martial arts systems, fitness and body mechanics. His professional experience as a Security Officer further strengthened his understanding of situational awareness, personal protection, conflict management, and real-world self-defense applications. This combination of practical experience and martial arts training allows him to provide students with valuable insights that extend beyond the dojo.
Known for his dedication, leadership, and willingness to support others, Sensei Ted exemplifies the spirit of Kyokushin both on and off the dojo floor. His commitment to helping students achieve their goals and his unwavering pursuit of improvement make him a respected instructor, mentor, and role model within the dojo community.
